Southern smallmouth bass can be tough to figure out. One day they’re here, the next they’re gone, but there’s one area where you can count on finding them almost year-round, the current-laden water that rushes through the dams of riverine impoundments.

Zell’s Guntersville Lake Memories

March 5, 2014

Just mention “Guntersville” to Zell Rowland and you’ll see a grin spread across his weathered face about as wide as the Grand Canyon. Rowland thumped Guntersville lake for 87 pounds over four days back in 2005 to win the Bassmaster Tour tournament held the final week of February. He caught 27 pounds on the final day and held off a hard charge from Morizo Shimizu, who was probing deeper water for “big mama” and brought in 30 pounds that afternoon.

Working a Yum Money Minnow on a Jighead

February 11, 2014

Trolling is the most common technique for big lake trout, but if you’ve got them located like anglers on the Niagara bar where the Niagara River dumps into Lake Ontario, working a YUM Money Minnow on a jighead is an awesome casting lure. Let the Money Minnow hit bottom and retrieve with a slow lift-and-pause retrieve. Believe it or not, big lakers fight harder when taken on a rig like this.

What You Need To Know About Using YUM F2 Attractant

February 11, 2014

YUM F2 attractant contains an ingredient that prompts it to actually penetrate into soft plastics, allowing you to “super charge” your lures before using them. Even soft plastics that don’t contain scent can be imbibed with scent to make them more attractive to bass. The day before a fishing trip, simply open the bag and spray several shots of spray into it. Reseal, and when you open the bag the next day the scent will be inside the soft plastics, and slowly release a strong scent trail as you fish.

Christie's Tube, Wooly Hawg Craw Net Fourth in FLW Event

February 11, 2014

Oklahoma angler and YUM pro staff member Jason Christie pitched and flipped his way to fourth place at the FLW Open tournament on rain swollen Beaver Lake in northwest Arkansas. Christie’s game plan coming into the tournament was to fish for largemouth in hard to reach places -- to go for broke and ignore the spotted and smallmouth bass. This strategy worked well for three days. Unfortunately it was a four day tournament, and he brought only three bass to the final day weigh-in.
