Pro Advice on Flippin' For Bass

February 11, 2014

Any angler can go randomly flipping around grass or cover and catch a few bass. That should not surprise anyone, but why just settle for a few fish when you can catch more and better bass. The key to better flipping comes from knowing when to fish a quick-sinking lure or a slow-falling lure, and what to do after the lure settles to the bottom.

Match-The-Hatch with Multi-Lure Rigs

February 11, 2014

“Match-the-hatch,” a phrase that originated with fly fishermen many moons ago, is now a concept adapted by anglers of all types all over the world. It’s simply matching the size and type of lure to the size and type of live food a particular fish is eating. Bass anglers are keenly aware of matching the size of baitfish bass are feeding on. Many bass tournaments are won by focusing on baitfish spawns and downsizing presentations to match the fry. It’s amazing that a 4-pound bass may be so selective that it actively engulfs two dozen 1-inch fry but ignores a 2-inch Pop-R or other bait, but as many frustrated anglers have learned, it happens quite often.

February 11, 2014

What’s it take to win a bass tournament on Toledo Bend Reservoir?  Getting five big bites (and landing them, of course). Glen Freeman of Converse, La., knew this going into the FLW EverStart Series Texas Division tournament last week and believes that you need a big bait for big, tournament-winning fish. Bass Fishing Tips For Active and Non-Active Fish

February 11, 2014

Having heard that the bass were super shallow and apt to eat swimming lizard baits, I eyed a package of YUMphibians that I had just gotten my hands on and had not yet tried. A brand new creature bait with twin curled tails, the YUMphibian has a definite lizardishness about it, and it seemed like it would swim enticingly.

New State Record Spotted Bass Caught On YUMbrella

February 11, 2014

Rarely has a product that caused so much friction within the fishing industry than the YUMbrella multi-bait rig, but one thing that can’t be disputed is that it catches big fish. And it stands up to the abuse those monsters dish out. State records are starting to fall. First there was Lance Walker’s 14.58-pound largemouth caught in the Tennessee portion of Pickwick Lake, which would have been the new record if he’d certified it (concern for the fish’s health prompted him to release her). Now, the Virginia state record spotted bass has fallen to the YUMbrella.

Dinger Does It Again For Alton

February 11, 2014

There may be no stronger supporter of the YUM Dinger than B.A.S.S. Elite Pro Alton Jones. Everywhere the Texan fishes, from the Bassmaster Classic all the way to simple fun-fishing on Falcon or his hometown waters, he’s got a bag of the soft plastic stickbaits close at hand. Latest in his list of YUM Dinger accomplishments is winning the B.A.S.S. Elite Series tournament on Florida’s St. Johns River March 15-19. After Day 1 of the event he sat in 17th place. He followed that with the biggest limit of the tournament – 28-pounds, 7-ounces -- on Day 2 and shot into the lead. An 18-pound bag on Day 3 set him up with a 9-pound lead over the next competitor heading into the final day.

Two Giant YUMbrella Bass In Three Days

February 11, 2014

In a span of just a couple of days Pickwick Lake, known more for trophy smallmouth fishing than its largemouth, gave up not one but two double-digit bass. One weighed 14.5 pounds! Both were caught on the same lure, a YUMbrella rigged with YUM Money Minnows. The 14.5 would have been the new Tenn. State Record if the angler, Lance Walker, would have been willing to endanger the bass by holding it for blood samples. When it became apparent that this could spell the end to a truly impressive creature, Walker took it back out and released it.

February 11, 2014

Do bass pros have a secret they keep to themselves? Is it a lure? It’s got to be a hidden honey hole. Maybe a hush-hush mix of chemicals they spray on their baits or some high-tech electronic doohickey that makes bass go nuts? Do they bury a dead cat in the graveyard under a full moon?
